• Shortly after the bombs fell, the California Highway Patrol took it upon itself to maintain California's roads and highways, in order to facilitate trade and aid efforts. However, as conditions grew worse in the Western Wastes, the C.H.P. began to resort to raiding their own trade routes with increasing violence.
  
  Eventually, these officers banded together under a new name, calling themselves The CHIMPS (California Highwaymen Patrol) become a nomadic-like band of raiders who trawl the highways and roads of the Western Wastes in their cars, robbing and raiding any poor Wasters who happen to cross their paths.
