About me: I love Roguelikes and Roguelites, whether they are traditional turn based roguelikes with true permadeath and zero carryover stats, action game roguelites with unlimited deaths and unlockable upgrades that carry over across dungeon runs, or anything in between the two extremes. I love Metroidvanias as well and many of my favorite games combine the two genres of Metroidvania and Roguelike/Roguelite.
I love big budget horror games and their high definition remakes but I'm also big fan of pixel-art. I love what Capcom has done with the Resident Evil series and I'm really enjoying the HD remakes/reboots
But at the same time I think that updated graphics have also ruined one of their trademark series of games as well. For me, games like MvC2 or Street Fighter Alpha or practically any King of Fighters from '94 to 2002, those games are art plain and simple. They are timeless and possess an aesthetic that, like any great work of art, does not age or become dated the way more modern games do. I love that so many indie developers out there feel the same and those are kinds of games that catch my interest way faster than any game that attempts to be as photo realistic as possible. Dead Cells is art. Children of Morta is art. Those games will still look good a hundred years from now while games like Arma III will have been replaced by Arma XXXV or whatever number they get up to by then and the game that once looked so real that news stations showed footage of it thinking it was actual warfare will instead look ridiculously old and unrealistic.
That being said I'm also a big horror fan and I really enjoyed the Resident Evil Remakes which did bring the gameplay and graphics of the originals into the modern age. So sometimes I guess a game that looks pretty and new ain't all bad.
It all really comes down to, is the game fun to play. If that's the case, I don't care if it's in ASCII or if it makes me have to build a new computer to play it. As long as it's fun.
